Understanding Docker and Kubernetes Basics

The 'It Works on My Machine' Problem

Have you ever built an application that worked perfectly on your laptop, but crashed completely when deployed to a server? This is the exact problem containerization solves.

What is Docker?

Docker allows you to package an application with all of its dependencies (libraries, frameworks, runtimes) into a standardized unit called a 'Container'. Containers are lightweight, isolated, and portable. If a Docker container runs on your local Windows machine, you can guarantee it will run exactly the same way on a Linux server in AWS.

Why Kubernetes?

While Docker is fantastic for running a single container, what happens when your application scales? What if you need to run 50 containers? What if one crashes in the middle of the night and needs to be restarted automatically?

This is where Kubernetes (K8s) comes in. Kubernetes is a container orchestration tool. It manages your Docker containers at scale. It handles load balancing, auto-scaling, self-healing (restarting failed containers), and automated rollouts and rollbacks.

The DevOps Revolution

Understanding Docker and Kubernetes is no longer just for 'DevOps Engineers'. Full stack developers are increasingly expected to understand how to containerize their applications. Mastering these tools bridges the gap between writing code and deploying scalable infrastructure, a core focus of our Cloud Computing & DevOps program at Iyal Learn.
